Capital Power contributes final $1 million to STARS Air Ambulance fleet renewal campaign
On December 15, Capital Power was pleased to announce the final $1 million contribution to STARS Air Ambulance (“STARS”) in support of their fleet renewal campaign, for a total of $2 million in support of this critical campaign. With Capital Power’s support, and the support of many other individuals and corporations across Western Canada, STARS has reached their fundraising goal.
“Capital Power has been a long-time supporter of STARS and we recognize the invaluable life-saving service the organization provides. We’re honoured to provide the final $1 million donation needed to complete the replacement of their helicopter fleet. With operations and employees in Alberta and British Columbia, it’s important that we support the essential work of STARS so that the service can continue to save lives across Western Canada.” Brian Vaasjo, Capital Power President & CEO
In June 2018, STARS unveiled a multi-year plan to replace its fleet of BK117 and AW139 aircraft with nine new medically equipped Airbus H145 helicopters, at a cost of $13 million each. $1 million outfits a helicopter with the medical interior needed to perform emergency life-saving procedures. An extensive review resulted in the selection of the H145 aircraft as the best option for STARS’ new fleet. It offers cutting-edge technology, advanced safety features, and an updated version of the medical interior found in STARS’ existing helicopters. STARS has been flying missions with the new H145 aircraft from its Calgary base since July 2019, thanks to early support from the Government of Canada and the Alberta government.
